Although many places have selective collection services, there are cities where this support is not available. However, collectors of recyclable items try to meet this demand, becoming fundamental players in increasing the percentage of waste that is recycled in Brazil.
Unfortunately, these initiatives alone are not enough to correctly dispose of recyclable waste. In fact, the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) provides for the non-generation of waste. However, when they are unavoidable, there will be an appropriate final disposition.
To this end, the PNRS establishes that responsibility for the life cycle of products must be shared. According to PNRS data, around 30% of all waste collected in Brazil has recycling potential, but only 3% is reused and transformed back into products.
Another example is plastic, one of the main components of garbage: of the 11 million tons produced per year, only 145 thousand (around 1%) are recycled. Index that makes Brazil the 4th largest producer of plastic waste and the one that recycles the least in the world.

These researches reveal that there is a great deal of waste in several sectors. The first of these is environmental, as more waste is sent to landfills, reducing its useful life. Furthermore, there is the economic and social point of view, since recycling materials can be a source of income for Brazilian families, and generates value and savings for companies.
It is important to keep in mind that many materials can be recycled. Some are more difficult, from an economic point of view, but for these cases, there are alternatives, such as co-processing, which already exists in Brazil. In this case, it is possible to use materials for the manufacture of cement that, today, are still usually discarded as waste.
